Inscribed: On stretcher, on fragmented printed label, in ink: “Retrato de D. Salvador Xamar/ Núm. 176”; on another label: “10278”. On back of frame and stretcher, label of the exhibition “Vicente López”, bearing no. 10, and on back of frame, a label from “Restauro Vandick” (the transport company of this exhibition). Provenance: Bequeathed to the Academy by Francesc Ignasi de Montserrat, who made his will in Valencia on June 11th 1859. Came to the Academy's Museum: 1863. Restauration: restored by Balaguer & Grau workshop in 1999. Exposición antológica de pintura, 2000, núm. 27. Note: The portrayed was "receiver of Malta" in Barcelona. There exists a preparatory drawing for the head (DIEZ 1994, P-721), coming from the Casa Torres collection in Madrid. The work was on loan to the Museus d’Art de Barcelona with inv. no. 10278. It was returned on December 1st 1980.
