Note: It belonged, beyond doubt, to an apostolate, as did numbers 340, 741 and 742. In the Real Academia de San Fernando in Madrid, there survives an identical Saint Mathew, an anonymous Neapolitan work that belonged to an apostolate. However, despite being very similar in style, the rest of the pieces of this latter series do not correspond to the other works in this present one.
On loan to the Museu Frederic Marès in Montblanc since 1979 (inv. no. 11). In the catalogue of this museum it is listed as Judes Iscariot, certainly owing to the coin-bag the figure holds in his left hand. Notwithstanding, this is also one of Saint Mathew's attributes for he had formerly been a tribute collector. |
